My Philosophy

At Greenwood Midwifery and Integrative Health, we believe in the strength and intuition of every woman we serve. Our philosophy is rooted in a deep respect for the natural birthing process and the profound capabilities of the human body. We view midwifery not as an oversight but as a partnership. I, Owon, am committed to empowering you with knowledge and support, fostering an environment where your voice leads the journey. Our approach is built on the foundation of relationship building and continuous education, ensuring that you feel both cared for and confident. We encourage a collaborative dialogue that respects and honors your individual needs, choices, and aspirations. Here, you are the foremost expert on your body, and our role is to support you in unlocking the power of your own instincts and decisions throughout the birthing experience.

It’s nice to meet you!

Hello! I’m Owon Johnson-Wilkes.

As a traditional, unlicensed homebirth midwife, I began attending births at the age of 15 and dedicated myself fully to the practice of autonomous birth work in 2017. My decision to remain unlicensed stems from a deep-seated belief in providing care that is profoundly aligned with the needs and wishes of my clients rather than strictly adhering to prescriptive, governmental guidelines. This freedom allows me to practice holistic care that genuinely respects and responds to the diverse traditions and preferences of the families I serve.

I share my life with my wonderful husband, Charles, and our three children, Jaxon, Ila, and Charles Jr. We also cherish our pets, Bear, our loyal German Shepherd, and Thackery, our mischievous Siamese cat. Family is my foundation and they inspire me every day.

Since 2017, I've had the honor of serving many families in Tulsa and surrounding areas. I am committed to continual professional development, actively participating in workshops and conferences both nationally and internationally. My expertise in managing serious complications during birth and postpartum underscores my proficiency and commitment to safe, trauma-informed care.

One of my core beliefs is the importance of balancing faith in God and our natural bodily processes with the use of holistic and Western medicine. I believe that these tools are gifts from God, intended to support and enhance our health and well-being. This philosophy guides my approach to care, ensuring that it is both spiritually and medically grounded.

What I cherish most about being a midwife is the opportunity to make a lasting impression on the families I work with and the relationships I've built over the years. As a Black midwife caring for Black bodies, I am deeply committed to creating a space where my clients feel safe, seen, and respected. My practice is founded on the principle that everyone should receive care that allows them to focus on the joy of childbirth without the barrier of skin color. I love to shower pregnant people with love and ensure they have a positive experience with their healthcare provider. Being able to provide care that acknowledges and celebrates our heritage is profoundly fulfilling, and it reinforces the importance of diversity and representation in healthcare. My role allows me to be a part of an empowering, transformative experience, bringing new lives into the world with care that uplifts and understands the unique needs of every family.

Holding the distinguished honor of being one of the few Black and Indigenous midwives in Tulsa, I see my role as a continuation of a profound legacy. My work is deeply connected to my heritage as a descendant of Tulsa Race Massacre survivors, and this connection fuels my commitment to providing empathetic, culturally attuned care.

In my practice, Greenwood Midwifery and Integrative Health, I focus on empowering each client by emphasizing education, relationship-building, and supporting their autonomy. My approach is not about overseeing; it’s about partnering, supporting, and empowering women to trust in their bodies and make informed decisions about their birth and care.

Welcome to a place where your voice is heard, your choices are respected, and your birthing experience is truly yours.
